Renowned Ghanaian investigative journalist Manasseh Azure Awuni has questioned President John Mahama’s commitment to the fight against illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey.

The investigative journalist stated that there is a lack of leadership and desire on the part of the president to end the galamsey menace, which is causing havoc to Ghana’s water bodies and forest reserves.

During his first media encounter on Wednesday, September 10, 2025, President Mahama acknowledged the growing calls for drastic action in the fight against illegal mining.

Many Ghanaians have called on the president to declare a state of emergency on galamsey and clamp down on the activities of illegal miners across the country.

However, the president stated he would only do so when it becomes necessary.

President Mahama further suggested that the galamsey menace got worse under the previous Nana Akufo-Addo-led administration.

Manasseh challenges Mahama’s galamsey assertions

However, reacting to this on Facebook, Manasseh Azure Awuni said President Mahama has not shown sufficient seriousness in fighting galamsey.

“President Mahama has been brilliant tonight. From his first term and now, President Mahama has always demonstrated a strong grasp on all the sectors. He’s not the kind that can be easily fooled by a minister or an appointee,” he said.

“On galamsey, however, he has been very disappointing. The decay did not start in the last eight years of Akufo-Addo, as the president said. I was a journalist when President Mahama was president. In his first term, I did not see the seriousness in fighting the menace. And his body language doesn’t seem to show that it will be any different,” he added.

He disputed President Mahama’s assertion that the decay caused by galamsey began only in the past eight years under President Akufo-Addo.

“The land that is destroyed because of galamsey can produce food crops, so we should stop creating the impression that the only alternative to illegal mining is ‘deviant acts’, as the president said,” he further stated.

The renowned journalist further criticised President Mahama’s decision to disband the anti-galamsey task force set up by the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Christian Tetteh Yohuno.

“Why disband the IGP’s task force instead of just asking them to verify permits when they visit sites? Which sites did the task force invade that turned out to be a legitimate mining concession?” he questioned.
