Barcelona eventually struck first when summer signing Marcus Rashford headed home, before adding a second with a stunning finish just 10 minutes later.
In the aftermath, players, supporters and pundits have flocked to social media to hail the England star, with one statistic from his dazzling display leaving Manchester United fans particularly uneasy.

After his relationship with Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim publicly broke down, it became evident over the summer that a departure was best for all parties.
While several clubs showed interest, including Aston Villa, where Rashford spent a brief loan spell in January, the 27-year-old ultimately sealed a dream transfer to Barcelona.

His dazzling display against Newcastle highlighted a near-perfect start to life in Spain, with analyst Statman Dave noting he now matches United’s entire squad for goals scored against Premier League opposition this season.
Although United have scored four goals across their four opening Premier League fixtures, one in the 1-1 draw with Fulham and three in the 3-2 win over Burnley, only two have been scored by United players.
United’s only goal in the draw with Fulham came as Rodrigo Muniz sent the ball into his own net following a corner kick from Bryan Mbeumo, while their opening goal against Burnley was an own goal from Josh Cullen.
Later in the match against Burnley, Mbeumo restored United’s lead as he scored his first goal at Old Trafford before captain Bruno Fernandes found the back of the net to win the game after being awarded a penalty in injury time
