Ghana’s Melcom Group has joined a nation in mourning after signing condolence books for eight officials killed in the August 6 military helicopter crash.
Group Managing Director Ramesh Sadhwani led the delegation to the Foreign Ministry, calling the victims “patriots who lost their lives in service of the nation.”
The ill-fated flight was carrying Defence Minister Dr. Edward Kofi Omane Boamah, Environment Minister Alhaji Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed, Acting Deputy Security Coordinator Limuna Mohammed Muniru, and five Air Force personnel to an anti-illegal mining operation in Obuasi. Their Harbin Z-9EH helicopter crashed in Adansi Akrofuom’s forested terrain.
“We feel this loss deeply,” Sadhwani told reporters, reflecting on Melcom’s 30-year presence in Ghana. “These gallant men served their country, and we stand united with grieving families.”
He welcomed President John Mahama’s establishment of a support fund for bereaved relatives, pledging to mobilize the Melcom Care Foundation for contributions.
Group General Manager Francis Sam praised Ghana’s collective response: “This unity shows our democracy’s maturity.”
He urged other businesses to support the fund, emphasizing aid for children of the deceased. “When crisis strikes, Ghana stands together and Melcom will always be part of that fabric.”
The retail giant’s commitment underscores corporate Ghana’s role in national healing as investigations into the crash continue.
