Mohamed Salah’s remarks on Arsenal and Manchester City’s title prospects have triggered widespread debate.

The Egyptian star, fresh off setting a new record for goal involvements in a 38-game campaign and guiding Liverpool to their second Premier League crown in five years, is once again in the spotlight.

Under Arne Slot, the Reds have invested over £300 million in reinforcements—signing Florian Wirtz, Hugo Ekitike, Milos Kerkez, Jeremie Frimpong, and teenage defender Giovanni Leoni, with Alexander Isak and Marc Guehi expected to follow—making them one of the strongest squads in Europe.

Even so, Salah has downplayed Liverpool’s chances, instead backing Arsenal to lift the title—a prediction that hasn’t sat well with the Emirates faithful. Speaking to Sky Sports before Sunday’s early clash at Anfield, he outlined why.

Salah Causes Big Stir After Naming Arsenal as the Title Favourites

Salah has previously weighed in on Arsenal’s title prospects after they ended last season as runners-up for the third year in a row.

Another second-place finish would set a Premier League record for the most consecutive runners-up spots, but the Egyptian winger is confident that Mikel Arteta’s men will finally take the extra step and claim the crown.

“I’ve said it a few times, today and also at the PFA awards, I said they [Arsenal] are the favourites because they have been together for 5-6 years, so they understand each other’s game. Other teams like us and [Manchester] City have changed a lot of players, which can be tricky.”

‘But again, teams with Pep Guardiola, they are always the favourites. But of course, my opinion is this year Arsenal are number one.’

Mohamed Salah’s record against Arsenal

Counting his brief Chelsea stint, Mohamed Salah has faced Arsenal 18 times competitively, winning eight, drawing six, and losing four. Against the Gunners, he has been a constant menace, recording 11 goals and two assists.

Salah’s scoring streak in this fixture dates back to 2014, when he netted Chelsea’s sixth in a 6-0 rout on Arsène Wenger’s 1,000th game. Since then, he has scored against Arsenal in every Premier League season for eight straight years, though 2017-18 remains the last time he struck both home and away.

Recent meetings include a late equaliser in a 2-2 draw in 2024 and Liverpool’s only goal in a 1-1 Anfield clash the season before, though he missed the reverse fixture through injury. He also scored in the 2022-23 draw but missed a crucial penalty, to Klopp’s disbelief.

All of his contributions have come in league play, with Salah absent or goalless in Arsenal clashes across the Community Shield, EFL Cup, and FA Cup.
