In a trending video, some traditional executioners took to the streets of Adum to discipline defaulters of the strict lockdown in place for the late Asantehemaa’s funeral rites.

In a video making waves on social media, some of the executioners, known as Abrafoɔ, descended on the bustling commercial area in Kumasi to reinforce the given strict lockdown.

Manhyia Palace enforced the strict protocols as a part of the funeral rites for Nana Konadu Yiadom III.

These began on Sunday, September 14, 2025, and are scheduled to end on September 18, 2025. This is said to be a final farewell to the queen mother, who passed away on August 7, 2025.

Executioners enforce discipline during Asantehemaa’s funeral rites

As seen in the trending video, under the cover of night, the Abrafoɔ, adorned with their distinctive black attire and carrying symbolic canes and tools, patrolled the streets, ensuring compliance with the Manhyia Palace’s order.

The video also captured these enforcers chasing residents found outside in the market. Their presence and activity showed the dire consequences of not following the order from the palace.

Programme outlined for late Asantehemaa’s funeral

The sequence of attendance, as captured in the programme outline for the Asantehemaa’s final funeral rites, is as follows:

  • Monday, September 15: Churches, religious leaders, political parties, educational institutions, NGOs, telecommunications companies, corporate entities, recognised associations, and the general public.
  • Tuesday, September 16: The judiciary and Ghana Bar, security agencies, Ghana Armed Forces, Police, Fire Service, Prisons Service, Immigration, Customs, State-Owned Enterprises (SOEs), public officials, financial institutions, and the general public.
  • Wednesday, September 17: Ministers of State, the diplomatic corps, members of Parliament, MMDCEs, non-Asante chiefs, mining companies, and the general public.
  • Thursday, September 18: The Presidency, former presidents and vice presidents, the diplomatic corps, and the general public.
