- Dr Mahamudu Bawumia and several bigwigs of the NPP are in the constituency campaigning ahead of the by-election on Tuesday, September 2, 2025
- During his meeting with some chiefs, Dr Bawumia shared what he believed to be the cause of Ernest Kumi’s death and why they shouldn’t vote for the NDC
Former Vice President, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, alleged that the court suit contesting the late Ernest Yaw Kumi’s victory of the Akwatia seat in the 2024 election led to his death.
The 2024 flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) said this when he met with chiefs at Akyem Wenchi ahead of the Akwatia by-election on Tuesday, September 2, 2025.

In a video on X, Dr Bawumia Ernest Kumi suffered from high blood pressure due to the court case, which was initiated by the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
He added that the constant increase in his blood pressure, coupled with sleeplessness and intimidation from the NDC, led to his death.
“Ernest Kumi got elected in 2024 after he lost the seat in a prior election. However, the NDC did not accept the results and filed a suit against him. He could not sleep because of the court. He was hounded and intimidated. So, his Blood pressure just kept rising. He died 26 days after the court’s final verdict.”
Dr Bawumia added that the NDC’s candidate for the by-election, Bernard Baidoo, was the lead counsel for the party. He therefore entreated the constituents not to vote for the NDC but rather to choose the NPP.
“It is the same lawyer who led the case against Ernest Kumi’s victory who is contesting on the NDC’s ticket. So, I am imploring the people of Wenchi to vote against the lawyer and the NDC.”
