Ivan Quashigah, Chairman of the National Film Authority’s governing board, has announced that the Authority plans to establish a national award scheme for the Ghanaian film industry.
In an interview with Kwame Dadzie and Doreen Avio on Daybreak Hitz on Hitz FM, he said such an initiative will help to lift the sector, even though several private film awards exist.
“It’s important that we have an award programme as part of our agenda to push interest in Ghanaian films. Award shows provide recognition in the industry. When we are able to put that together, it throws some light on the winners as well as the whole industry. So it is important that we have something like that. There are a couple of them that are there but we need to have a national one,” Ivan said.
On Wednesday, 16th September 2025, the National Film Authority hosted its maiden dialogue at the Cedi Conference Centre, University of Ghana. The event gathered filmmakers from across the country.
Principal among the plans outlined by the leadership of the Authority were reaching 1% of Ghana’s population in film distribution drive, cinema on wheels, and film clubs in schools. Others are dubbing films into French and local languages, film and tourism integration, cinema in the park, regional cinema partnership, among others.

The National Film Authority (NFA) was established under the Development and Classification of Film Act, 2016 (Act 935). Its mandate includes evolving a dynamic, economically self-sustaining and culturally conscious film industry in the national interest, promoting a conducive environment for local film production, distribution, exhibition and marketing, and encouraging the use of films to project the identity and image of Ghana and its people, both locally and internationally.
The NFA also regulates foreign participation in the film industry, enforces standards of ethics and technical quality, registers and licences film-exhibition premises, classifies films for public exhibition, oversees the Film Development Fund, and ensures compliance with copyright and royalties laws.
