Nigerian telecommunications provider Globacom (Glo) has significantly reduced international call charges for its customers, targeting over 15 key countries including Ghana.
The new International Direct Dialling (IDD) rates took effect on August 10th, offering lower costs for calls to popular destinations across Africa, Asia, Europe, and the Middle East.
Calls to the United States now cost ₦30 per minute, down from ₦35. Rates to the United Kingdom dropped to ₦350 from ₦400, and calls to India are now ₦40, reduced from ₦45. Major reductions were seen for China (₦75), Saudi Arabia (₦300), and Cameroon (₦700).
Within Africa, calls to Benin Republic and Togo cost ₦650, Niger Republic is ₦750, Ghana is ₦500, Côte d’Ivoire and Libya are ₦700, while Malawi decreased to ₦1,100 from ₦1,200. Rates also fell for the United Arab Emirates (₦325) and Germany (₦550).
Glo stated the cuts aim to deliver more value and encourage customers to choose its network for international calls.
The company also plans to introduce new IDD bundles soon, promising even more attractive deals for frequent international callers. It urged subscribers to leverage the cheaper rates to stay connected with friends and business contacts worldwide.
This price move comes amid significant challenges for the operator. Glo faces a two-year regulatory ultimatum to separate its Chairman and CEO positions.
The company has also experienced customer losses and market share decline in Nigeria over the past two years, following its complete exit from the Ghanaian market around the same period. Thinking of calling abroad? Glo hopes these cuts make its service the obvious choice.
