A member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kofi Ameyaw, has stated that the party’s upcoming flagbearer race is fundamentally about recapturing power in the 2028 general elections.
Speaking on the JoyNews AM Show on Monday, Mr Ameyaw said the NPP must rally behind a candidate who can connect with ordinary Ghanaians and inspire confidence in the party’s renewal.
According to him, former Assin Central MP, Kennedy Agyapong, best embodies the qualities needed to restore the NPP’s connection with the electorate and secure victory in 2028.
“This whole election is about NPP recapturing power. So if you are a delegate of the New Patriotic Party and you will be voting on January 31, 2026, there must be an overarching goal that should be your focus — that you need power, that in 2028 it is possible for NPP to come back to power,” he said.
“If it will be possible, we need to present Ghanaians with a candidate that they identify their hopes and aspirations with. We need to present them with a candidate whose name resonates well, whose track record, things that he has done, his philanthropy, his fight for the poor — and that person is Kennedy Agyapong,” he added.
Mr Ameyaw further claimed that sentiments from the grassroots reflect strong public support for Mr Agyapong.
“Some of us have had the opportunity to sit on national TV, so when you go out, they see you and talk to you, and they tell us that if you guys do not bring Kennedy Agyapong, we will not vote,” he said.

He urged delegates to prioritise electability and public appeal over internal loyalty, stressing that the outcome of the January 2026 flagbearer race will determine whether the NPP returns to power or remains in opposition.
On Friday, October 10, the NPP conducted balloting for positions on the ballot paper ahead of its much-anticipated flagbearer contest, with Kennedy Agyapong picking the first slot.
