Former Member of Parliament for Assin Central, Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, has emerged as the clear favourite to win the flagbearer race of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

According to a poll conducted by Nhyira FM, based in Kumasi, Kennedy Agyapong is leading the race by a wide margin against his main contender, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, Ghana’s former vice president.

Figures released by Nhyira FM showed that 50 per cent of NPP delegates, supporters, and sympathisers want the Assin Central MP to lead the party into the 2028 election.

According to the polls, the NPP delegates and grassroots supporters chose Kennedy Agyapong because they consider him bold, truthful, and with the right business acumen to create jobs for the teeming unemployed youth.

Dr Bawumia, the 2024 presidential candidate of the NPP, is the second-favourite candidate of the respondents who participated in the Nhyira FM polls, garnering 25 per cent approval.

The NPP delegates based their decision to select him as their preferred presidential candidate on his humility, respect, and the belief that he is easy to market to the general Ghanaian voters.

Former Minister for Education and MP for Bosomtwe, Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum, came third with 20.19 per cent of delegates’ approval.

Dr Adutwum was considered by the respondents who picked him as the ideal candidate to bridge the factions within the party and improve the quality of education in the country. They added that he is also humble.

Dr Bryan Acheampong, the MP for Abetifi, placed fourth with 4.81 per cent approval from the NPP delegates.

Respondents in the Nhyira FM poll selected Dr Acheampong for his humility and saw him as a new face and successful businessman.

A former general secretary of the NPP, Kwabena Agyei Agyapong, placed fifth, polling 0.0 per cent approval from the respondents of the Nhyira FM survey.

NPP schedules presidential primary for 2026

The NPP presidential primary is scheduled to take place on January 31, 2026, with nominations open for qualified candidates to file.

All interested aspirants are required to pay GH¢100,000 for nomination forms and GH¢500,000 as a filing fee.

So far, seven leading members of the NPP, including the former vice president, have declared their bid for the flagbearer race.

Last week, a group of NPP youth organisers picked the nominations for Dr Bawumia after endorsing his candidacy.

Bawumia tipped to win NPP flagbearer race

In a contrasting event, YEN.com.gh reported earlier that Dr Mahamudu Bawumia was tipped to win the flagbearer race of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), with the primaries scheduled for January 2026.

According to a poll conducted by Global InfoAnalytics, led by Mussa Dankwah, the former vice president emerged as the main frontrunner to lead the opposition NPP into the 2028 elections.

Figures released by Global InfoAnalytics showed that Dr Bawumia commanded 52 per cent support among NPP delegates, while his main opponent, Kennedy Agyapong, former Member of Parliament for Assin Central, secured 17 per cent.
