Ghana’s New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentary minority has presented a GH¢100,000 cash donation to the national women’s football team, the Black Queens, honouring their historic third-place finish at the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).
Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin led the symbolic presentation during the team’s courtesy visit to Parliament on Tuesday, praising their “determination and resilience” throughout the tournament in Morocco.
The Black Queens reached the semi-finals for the first time since 2016 and secured bronze after a 4–3 penalty victory over South Africa.
This marked Ghana’s first WAFCON medal in eight years, a significant rebound after failing to qualify in 2022 and a group-stage exit as hosts in 2018. Afenyo-Markin stated the gift reflects appreciation for the team’s tactical discipline and renewed national pride in women’s football.
The achievement follows years of restructuring under coach Nora Häuptle, with the team conceding only three goals in six matches.
The parliamentary recognition adds to earlier commendations from President John Mahama and sports authorities. Players confirmed the funds will support training and development programs as they prepare for upcoming World Cup qualifiers.
