Captain Smart mourns the crash victims
On Onua Maakye aired on Onua TV on August 13, 2025, Captain Smart mounted the stage with a live band to perform gospel songs and a worship medley to honour the eight victims of the Obuasi military helicopter crash.
This comes at the back of the Ghana Air Force Harbin Z-9 helicopter that crashed on Wednesday, August 6, 2025, in the Adansi Akrofuom District of the Ashanti Region, claiming the lives of all eight people on board.
The aircraft, which had taken off from Accra, was headed for Obuasi to support a government programme to combat illegal mining when it suddenly disappeared from radar and went down in a remote area.
In light of this, the Onua presenter decided to honour the eight victims by dedicating a segment on Onua Maakye to honour the departed souls.
Victims of the helicopter crash
The helicopter crash victims included several high-profile government officials: Minister of Defence Edward Omane Boamah, Minister of Environment, Science & Technology Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed, Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator Limuna Mohammed Muniru, NDC Vice Chairman Samuel Sarpong, and Deputy Director General of the Disaster Relief Agency Samuel Aboagye.
Three military crew members, Sqn. Leader Peter Bafemi Anala, Flying Officer Twum Ampadu, and Sgt. Ernest Addo Mensah also lost their lives in the tragedy.
Ghana in national mourning
President John Dramani Mahama declared three days of national mourning, ordering flags to be flown at half-mast in honour of the victims.
Families, friends, and political leaders have been visiting the bereaved households, while military teams continue investigating the cause of the crash.
Black box flight recorders have been recovered from the wreckage to aid in the probe. The accident has sparked renewed discussions about the age and safety of Ghana’s military aircraft fleet, even as the nation unites in grief.

Pilot flies Ghana’s official military helicopter
YEN.com.gh reported that a Ghanaian military pilot, known online as HeliPilotGH, offered a rare glimpse into what it was like to fly a Ghana Air Force Harbin Z-9 helicopter over the city.
In the trending video, he described the experience of soaring 1,500 feet above ground alongside two fellow Ghana Armed Forces pilots. The pilots also showed off their incredible skills as they turned in circles and flew past buildings.
While many social media users admired his skill and detailed narration, others expressed concern about the security agency’s continued use of older helicopter models for routine training.
