Turkson Acheampong, brother of military officer Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah, has broken his silence following his demise in the tragic helicopter crash in the Ashanti Region of Ghana on Wednesday, August 6, 2025.

In a phone interview with media personality Captain Smart on the Onua Maakye show on Thursday, August 7, 2025, the late soldier’s brother shared that he heard the tragic news from a sibling who called him and their mother while they were roaming in town.

He noted that his mother suddenly broke down in tears after receiving the news of Sergeant Ernest Addo’s passing.

He shared that his brother tragically passed away in the helicopter crash exactly a month after he tied the knot with his fiancée in Cape Coast.

He said:

“I was walking in town with my mother when one of my siblings called me and informed my mother that he had seen our brother’s demise on social media. I later saw my mother crying. I later checked social media and saw the news of the plane crash, with my brother among the victims.”

“Yesterday (August 6, 2025) was exactly one month since my brother got married to his wife at Cape Coast.”

Turkson Acheampong noted that his late brother’s wife, Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah, is currently employed as a teacher in an educational institution at Oda in the Eastern Region of Ghana.

Ernest Addo passes away in helicopter crash

Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah was among the eight individuals who tragically lost their lives in the helicopter crash that happened at the Sikaman Forest in the Adansi South District in the Ashanti Region.

The military officer and his colleagues, Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala and Flying Officer Manin Twum-Ampadu, were accompanying five government officials to the official launch of the Responsible Cooperative Mining and Skills Development Programme (rCOMSDEP) in Obuasi.

The Minister of Defence, Dr Edward Omane Boamah, and the Environment Minister, Dr Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed, were on board the Z-9 helicopter when the tragic crash happened.

The Deputy National Security Coordinator, Limuna Muniru, a Vice Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Dr Samuel Sarpong, and the Former Parliamentary Candidate for Obuasi East, Samuel Aboagye, who was also on board, did not survive the unfortunate incident.
