With the 2025 MTV Video Music Awards set for Sunday, September 7 at New York’s UBS Arena, anticipation is building not only for the live performances but also for the potential record-breaking wins. According to data compiled by VegasInsider.com, more than 20 records are on the line at this year’s ceremony.

Lady Gaga could emerge as the night’s biggest story. Nominated for 12 awards, she has the chance to break Peter Gabriel’s long-standing record of most VMAs won in a single night (10, set in 1987). A sweep could also bring her career total to 30 wins, tying Taylor Swift as the most-awarded artist in VMA history. Even without a full sweep, Gaga could move past Madonna (20) and possibly Beyoncé (28) in the all-time rankings. A win for her hit “Die With A Smile”could also make her the first artist to win Song of the Year twice, while a victory in Video of the Year would place her among the rare group of artists with multiple wins in that category.

Kendrick Lamar also enters the night with major milestones in reach. With 10 nominations, he could tie or surpass Eminem’s record as the most awarded male artist in VMA history (15 wins). A Video of the Year win for “Not Like Us”would make Lamar the first male artist to secure three wins in the category.

Taylor Swift, already the most decorated artist in VMA history with 30 trophies, could extend her lead with another win in the Artist of the Year category. That would bring her total to 31 wins and mark her third consecutive victory as Artist of the Year, a feat unmatched by any other performer.

Other artists could also tie or break notable records:

  • Ariana Grande (“Brighter Days Ahead”) could match Britney Spears and Taylor Swift with three wins in Best Pop.

  • Green Day could equal R.E.M. as the most awarded music group in VMA history if they win Best Rock.

  • The Weeknd (“Timeless”) or SZA (“Drive”) could take the record for most Best R&B wins, each aiming for a third trophy.

  • The Weeknd & Playboi Carti’s “Timeless” could become the first all-male collaboration to win Video of the Year.

  • In Best New Artist, a victory by Ella Langley, Gigi Perez, or Lola Young would extend a record-breaking streak of female solo winners for eight consecutive years.

The 2025 MTV Video Music Awards will air live coast-to-coast on CBS at 8PM ET/5PM PT, with a simulcast on MTV and streaming on Paramount+ in the U.S.
