The Northern Regional Police Command has confirmed that calm has been restored at the Tamale Technical University following an unlawful demonstration by students on Tuesday, 16th September.
According to a police statement issued on Wednesday, September 17, intelligence received around 9:00 am indicated that approximately 500 students had gathered in front of the university’s administration block. The protest quickly escalated, prompting a swift response from law enforcement.
A team of officers, led by Superintendent Richard Lantei Odartey, was deployed to the campus to quell the unrest and maintain order.
On arrival, officers observed that the protesters had set fire to vehicle tyres at several key locations, including the main entrance to the university from the TAMASCO direction, near the police post at Kpalsi, and directly in front of the administration block.
The statement noted that the situation further deteriorated when students reportedly became hostile upon sighting the police.
Some began hurling stones, resulting in injuries to three students and three police officers. All six individuals are currently receiving treatment in the hospital.
Fortunately, no damage was recorded to school property or police facilities.
Police succeeded in bringing the situation under control, and calm has since been restored to the campus.
A temporary police deployment remains on-site as a precautionary measure to prevent any further disturbances.
