A viral video of former President Nana Akufo-Addo standing up to greet President John Dramani Mahama has sparked discussions on social media.

Numerous prominent Ghanaians, including powerful political leaders, descended on the Ashanti Regional capital of Kumasi to attend the final funeral rites of the late Asantehemaa, Nana Konadu Yiadom III.

The elder sister of the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, died on August 11, 2025, and was buried in a week-long affair from September 14-18.

President John Dramani Mahama, former Presidents Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and John Agyekum Kufuor, former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, and many others, attended the funeral to commiserate with the Asantehene.

Akufo-Addo stands to greet President Mahama

An iconic moment occurred during the Asantehemaa’s funeral as former President Nana Akufo-Addo stood up to greet the current President, John Dramani Mahama.

As per protocol, Akufo-Addo and everyone else had to stand when the President arrived, and he shook hands with some prominent people.

In the video, the two political rivals were seen exchanging pleasantries.

During his time in office, the former President was insistent on many occasions that chiefs, who are customarily exempt from the rule, still stand to acknowledge his presence.

Social media users expressed amazement that he was now also being forced to stand up to greet his predecessor.
