Acting Chief Executive Officer of COCOBOD and veteran broadcaster, Dr. Randy Abbey, has filed a defamation suit against the Bono Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kwame Baffoe, popularly known as Abronye DC.
The lawsuit, lodged on Tuesday, August 26, 2025, seeks GHS 20 million in damages over what Dr. Abbey describes as “false, malicious, and defamatory” claims made by Abronye during a public broadcast and subsequently circulated on social media.
According to the writ, Abronye accused Dr. Abbey of misusing state resources and engaging in corrupt practices at COCOBOD. He alleged that the CEO transported a personal chair in several Land Cruisers from Accra to cocoa farms because he refused to sit on chairs offered by farmers.
Abronye also claimed Abbey manipulated internal appointments to enable the embezzlement of public funds.
Dr. Abbey, however, insists the allegations are entirely fabricated and aimed at tarnishing his professional reputation. His lawyers argue that such reckless commentary undermines accountability and erodes trust in public institutions.
The reliefs being sought include a declaration that Abronye’s statements are defamatory, a full retraction and unqualified apology to be published across all platforms, the removal of all defamatory material from circulation, general, punitive, and compensatory damages of GHS 20 million, a perpetual injunction restraining Abronye from further defamatory remarks, and legal costs as well as any other relief the court deems fit.
The case, filed through COCOBOD’s Legal Department, underscores growing concerns over the spread of unverified allegations in Ghana’s political discourse.
This is not the first time Abronye has faced such legal action. In July 2025, Hugh Clement A. Brown, Acting Chief Executive of the Forestry Commission, also sued him for defamation, seeking GHS 20 million in damages.
Abronye is yet to publicly comment on the latest suit.
