Samuel Sarpong’s son shares father’s dying wish
In a video seen by YEN.com.gh, one of the children of the late NDC Vice-Chairman, Dr Samuel Sarpong, shared his father’s dying wish.
He said his father was passionate in the fight against galamsey and had gone to his grave wishing that the menace would be ended once and for all.
Sarpong’s son said that since his father had now died fighting for that cause, the President had to ensure that his dying wish becomes fulfilled.
“My dad was a hero; he died working for the nation, and his legacy would always live. Sarpong never liked galamsey, so with this tragedy, I hope the President would ensure that galamsey is stopped,” he said.
Illegal small-scale mining, locally known as galamsey, has caused untold destruction to Ghana’s water bodies, soil and forest reserves in recent years.
According to the research institute ISS Africa, water pollution caused by the practice has led to some citizens contracting chronic diseases and could cause acute water shortages by 2030.

Sarpong’s son called for the government to renew its fight against galamsey to honour his father’s legacy.
“Galamsey is destroying our water bodies, destroying a lot of things. He was attending a program about fighting this menace when he died so I’m just praying that everything would be okay. We can’t question God [over this tragedy]; we can only make things right for galamsey to stop.”
