Sheffield United’s board has parted ways with Ruben Selles after a nightmare opening to the Championship campaign, with former boss Chris Wilder emerging as the frontrunner for a dramatic return.

Selles, who only stepped into the role during the summer, oversaw five straight league defeats and a humiliating 5-0 thrashing at Ipswich Town on Friday.

According to Football League World, the loss left the Blades anchored to the bottom of the table, extending their goal drought to four matches and sealing his fate.

Also, reports from Daily Mail Sport suggest Wilder is open to another stint at Bramall Lane. The 57-year-old, a lifelong Blades supporter, has enjoyed a rollercoaster history with the club.

Born in South Yorkshire, Wilder played for United, then twice took charge as manager, famously guiding them from League One obscurity to a top-half Premier League finish in 2020.

Although his second spell ended in disappointment as relegation loomed, his reputation as a club legend remains intact.

Wilder’s attachment to the Blades and his record of steadying the ship in tough circumstances are believed to make him a strong candidate to replace Selles.

Turmoil at the top has compounded United’s struggles. Former chairman Kevin McCabe lost control in a dispute with Prince Abdullah bin Mosaad al Saud, before the club was sold in December to an American consortium fronted by Steven Rosen and Helmy Eltouky.

It was Prince Abdullah who originally brought Wilder back, but the American owners dismissed him last summer following disagreements over recruitment strategy.

They favoured an AI-driven approach to player acquisitions, while Wilder preferred a more traditional method. Despite the split, both parties maintained good relations, leaving the door ajar for a reunion.

Wilder adapts tactics to rescue Sheffield United

Insiders say Wilder has mellowed since his earlier managerial stints. While he still values authority and old-school grit, he is believed to now embrace the role of data and modern technology in football.

That adaptability could strengthen his chances of being entrusted with the task of lifting the Blades out of their current crisis.

For United, Wilder’s name carries weight among supporters, who still cherish memories of their unexpected Premier League heroics.

With the club in freefall, bringing him back may feel less like a gamble and more like a return to familiarity.

Fan reaction to Selles’ sacking

Sheffield United’s decision to part ways with Ruben Selles has sparked a wave of mixed reactions online.

While many fans believe the dismissal was inevitable after such a poor run of results, others expressed sympathy for the Spaniard but urged the club to move quickly for Chris Wilder.
