Ben Nunoo Mensah, former President of the Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC), has been appointed to the reconstituted Board of Directors for the state-owned Tema Oil Refinery (TOR).

The move signals the government’s drive to revitalize the struggling energy asset under President John Mahama’s administration.

Energy Minister John Abdulai Jinapor, acting on behalf of President Mahama, inaugurated the board with a mandate to restore operations and return TOR to profitability.

“Your foremost duty is to get TOR back on stream,” Jinapor stated, emphasizing the refinery’s role as a “vital national asset.” The board, chaired by Hon. Nayon Bilijo, pledged “urgency and dedication” to address operational and financial challenges.

Nunoo Mensah brings leadership experience from his transformative GOC tenure, marked by transparency and institutional reforms. His appointment bridges sports governance and energy-sector revitalization, aligning with TOR’s need for strategic oversight.

The refinery’s revival is critical to Ghana’s energy security amid ongoing green transition efforts.

The board’s immediate task is drafting a roadmap to stabilize operations and attract investment.
