The widow of former Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr. Samuel Sarpong, could not contain her tears at the state funeral held on Friday, August 15, to honour the memory of her late husband and the seven other individuals who died in the helicopter crash.

As a tribute was read on her behalf, Ekyaa Sarpong, consumed with grief and surrounded by her family on the podium, lowered her head while the family representative delivered the speech.

Her sorrow gave way to tears as the reader began to speak about the fond memories the widow shared with her late NDC stalwart during the 37 years they spent together as a couple.

The tribute shed light on the final call the widow had with Dr. Sarpong on August 6, where the NDC bigwig informed her of his trip to Obuasi for an event and promised to return home on a specific date, which never came to pass

At that point, the widow of Dr. Sarpong was overwhelmed with sorrow and had to be consoled by other representatives who were standing next to her.

Details of the helicopter crash:

Dr. Samuel Sarpong was one of eight casualties in the tragic helicopter crash that occurred on August 6, 2025.

The others included Defence Minister Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, Minister for Environment, Science, Technology, and Innovation Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, Deputy National Security Coordinator Limuna Muniru, Former Parliamentary Candidate for Obuasi East Samuel Aboagye, Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala, Flying Officer Manin Twum-Ampadu, and Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah.
