Hearts of Oak face a familiar opening day test

Beyond the entertainment, all eyes were on the football itself.

Hearts of Oak came into the new campaign eager to shake off a troubling pattern.

Since 2018, the Phobians have not won their opening league fixture, a run that has haunted the Accra-based side season after season.

Coach Mas-Ud Didi Dramani’s men had shown promise in preseason, clinching both the Democracy Cup and the Homowo Peace Cup, though they narrowly missed out on the GHALCA Top 4 trophy.

Supporters hoped that momentum would finally translate into a strong league start.

Hohoe United, making history as the tenth club from the Volta Region to compete in the top flight, had their own ambitions.

Fresh from topping Zone Three of the Division One League with an exciting brand of football, they carried the confidence of newcomers determined to make a statement.

Their task was daunting, but history offered encouragement. Just last season, debutants Basake Holy Stars stunned Hearts of Oak on the very first day.

The Hohoe side, fuelled by that precedent, set their sights on replicating the upset.

Andre Ayew ugred to join Hearts of Oak

Earlier, YEN.com.gh reported that sports analyst Raymond Nyamador urged Andre Ayew to join Hearts of Oak, arguing that the move could reignite his Black Stars career before the 2026 World Cup.

The former FIFA U-20 World Cup champion is currently without a club, leaving fans eager to know where his next chapter will unfold.
