The Deputy Director of Elections and IT for the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Tanko Computer, has cautioned NPP flagbearer aspirant Dr Bryan Acheampong against using tribal and religious attacks in his campaign against former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia.
He said such attacks were not only divisive but also inaccurate in assessing electoral performance.
Dr Acheampong, who is seeking to lead the NPP into the 2028 elections, recently argued that Dr Bawumia could not deliver votes from the northern regions despite being a native of the area.
Responding to this, Tanko Computer stressed that the argument was misplaced, pointing to the Eastern Region’s voting pattern in 2024.
“If you say Bawumia failed because he couldn’t deliver the North, then what about the Eastern Region where the numbers were almost 50/50? Should we then blame it on those from there too?” he queried.
He further warned that tribal and religious undertones in political discourse could deepen divisions in the country and weaken Ghana’s democratic culture.
“We must discourage politics of ethnicity and religion. Leadership should be about competence, vision, and policies, not about where someone comes from or the faith they profess,” Tanko Computer said.
The NDC Deputy Director of Elections and IT also reminded Dr Acheampong that elections are determined by multiple factors, including the national economy, governance record, and campaign strategy.
He urged aspirants in the NPP flagbearer race to focus on presenting credible visions for the party’s future instead of resorting to attacks that risk alienating voters.
