The Volta and Oti Regions Chapter of the Teachers and Educational Workers’ Union (TEWU) of TUC (Ghana) has joined in the nationwide strike action in demand for improved working conditions for non-teaching staff.
This was in solidarity with the directive by the national leadership for them to lay down their tool to impress on the government to do the needful.
The leadership lamented the continuous neglect of the demands of non-teaching staff of the Ghana Education Service, Universities, the Ghana Library Authority, and the Ghana Museums and Monuments Board for better conditions of service.
Addressing the press in Ho, the Internal Relations Officer of TEWU Volta and Oti Regions Chapter, Ruth Baido explained that the neglect was evident in the delay in signing conditions of service, approving allowances, and promotions for the members.
She said that several promises made to them by the government regarding their demands have been unfulfilled, though the Union committed to dialogue with its social partners.
In light of this, she said the association decided to embark on the strike on November 19, 2025, until further notice.
“The Teachers and Educational Workers’ Union (TEWU) of TUC has exercised patience and shown commitment to dialogue with our social partners. Unfortunately, the issues that affect our members remain unresolved, and promises made to us have been left unfulfilled.”
“This persistent neglect is nothing short of discrimination and unfair labour practice which both the 1992 Constitution and the Labour Act, Act 651 throw upon.”
“It is for this reason that, effective today, 19th September 2025, TEWU of TUC declares a nationwide strike with immediate effect, all non-teaching staff of GES, Public and Technical Universities, and staff of Ghana Library Authority and Ghana Museums and Monuments Board across the country are directed to stay away from work until further notice. Our demands are clear and justifiable”, she said.
She demanded immediate action on the signing of the proposed conditions of service and approval of allowances, adding that their employers must attach some urgency to their promotion issues.
“TEWU demands Immediate signing of the conditions of service for TEWU of TUC (Gh) and all Junior Staff of Public and Technical Universities. Staff of the Ghana Library Authority
Ghana Museums and Monument Board.”
“Inclusion of GES, non-teaching staff in the payment of Continuous Professional Development Allowance, effective September 2025, and resolution of all Promotion Grievance in the GES.
“Government, particularly the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission must conclude and sign all Conditions of Service without further delays or excuses”, she listed.
Madam Baido clarified that the strike action was not targeted at the students “but against an unfair system that continuously undermines the dignity and rights of TEWU members”, directing all TEWU members “to stay at home in solidarity until further notice.”
