Ghanaians filled Accra’s Independence Square on Saturday night for a candlelight vigil honoring late highlife legend Charles Kwadwo Fosu, known as Daddy Lumba, who passed away July 26 after a brief illness.
Dressed in black, mourners lit candles and sang along to his timeless hits as choral performances and poetry echoed across the square, creating a poignant tribute to the icon whose music defined generations.
The vigil marked the first in a series of commemorative events celebrating Daddy Lumba’s legacy. Attendees described an atmosphere of collective grief and reverence, with many sharing personal stories of how his songs shaped their lives. The gathering underscored his unparalleled cultural impact, uniting young and old in reflection of Ghana’s musical heritage.
Organized by the Creative Arts Council and MUSIGA, the event sets the stage for further tributes to the artist who pioneered Borga Highlife and left an indelible mark on African music.
