“Time To Focus on Lessons, Not to Apportion Blame”: Veep Tells Ghanaians After Helicopter Crash

Vice President Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang entreated Ghanaians to turn their grief from the fatal helicopter crash incident into a time of unity, sober reflection, and renewed commitment to national development.

Prof Opoku-Agyemang made this call at the Evening of Reflection and Memorial for the eight victims at the Forecourt of the State House on Saturday, August 9, 2025.

In her reflection, the Vice President said the level of grief was indescribable.

“This is not a time for perfect words nor a time for the right thoughts, because there are none,” she remarked, adding that the departed had “served their nation and humanity well.”

She recounted personal encounters with her late colleagues and paid tribute to the three military personnel who died in the line of duty.

Prof Opoku-Agyemang admitted that the tragedy has left many in sorrow, including family, friends, and colleagues of the eight victims. She added that strangers who did not even know the deceased were grieving.

In her reflection, Prof Opoku-Agyemang said Ghanaians must desist from political point-scoring or blame games in a time like this.

She said everyone must pay attention to details and facts to avert similar tragedies in the future.

“It is a time for wishing our colleagues, who have perished in the line of duty, peaceful rest. It is a time for praying for comfort for their families and for everyone,” she said.

“It is also a time for the rest of us to renew our pledge to work in ways that truly advance our country, as they have tried to do,” she added.

The eight victims who lost their lives in the helicopter crash were:

Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, Minister for Defence

Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed, Minister for Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation, and MP for Tamale Central

Alhaji Limuna Muniru Mohammed, Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator

Dr. Samuel Sarpong, National Vice Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC)

Samuel Aboagye, a former parliamentary candidate

Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala

Flying Officer Manin Twum-Ampadu

Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah

Two helicopter victims to be buried

Meanwhile, the Muslim victims of the crash will be buried on Sunday, August 10, 2025, according to Islamic tradition.

The two are Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed, Minister for Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation, and MP for Tamale Central, and Alhaji Limuna Muniru Mohammed, Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator.

Janazah prayers will be held at 2:00 p.m. at the Forecourt of the State House in Accra, followed by burial at 2:30 p.m. at the Military Cemetery.
