A 26-year-old football star has sadly lost his life following a devastating head-on car crash.
Marcos Olmedo, who featured in five Copa Libertadores appearances, died on the morning of Sunday, August 24.

Two other men, aged 30 and 34, were also killed in the accident, which involved two vehicles.
CCTV footage revealed a pickup truck veering across the solid white edge line before smashing at high speed into an oncoming car.
The tragic collision happened on the E20 highway in Quinindé, Ecuador, according to reports from NeedToKnow.
Emergency services rushed to the scene but were unable to save the victims.
Olmedo’s wife pays tribute to her husband
Olmedo, originally from Guayaquil, was a devoted father to a three-year-old boy named Lemarcus, whom he shared with his wife, Evelyn Clavijo.
In a heart-wrenching Facebook post, Evelyn expressed her grief and paid tribute to her late husband, describing the pain of losing him and the void left behind.

“Those who knew Marcos Olmedo know the kind of person he was. He taught me that you always have to give what is needed, not what you have left over.
“It’s up to me to work to raise our son and give him what he always wanted: an education, a roof over his head, values, and guidance and instruction in the word of God.”
“He was afraid to entrust his firstborn to anyone else, so I devoted myself to our son Lemarcus. With my heart broken into a thousand pieces, I write these lines”
“How do I get over you love of my life? How do I explain this to our son? This hurts and tears my soul. Rest in peace my beautiful love.”
Mushuc Runa mourns Marcos Olmedo after tragic death
Olmedo had only played four matches for top-flight side Mushuc Runa SC after joining the Ambato-based club in June.
In a heartfelt Instagram post, accompanied by a black ribbon in tribute to the late midfielder, Mushuc Runa wrote:
“With deep sorrow we regret to inform you of the death of our beloved player Marcos Olmedo.
“Our deepest condolences to his family and loved ones at this time of great sorrow. Rest in peace Marcos.”
He was named in the squad for Mushuc Runa’s home game against CD Macará, one of his former clubs, on Saturday, August 23, but did not feature and remained on the bench.
Olmedo, who primarily played as a defensive midfielder, began his professional career in 2017 and went on to represent several clubs, including LDU Quito and CD El Nacional, two of Ecuador’s most prestigious teams. In 2024, he netted his only career goal while playing for El Nacional.
A spokesperson for El Nacional paid tribute to him, describing Olmedo as a “warrior who marked our history and brought us glory with a star after 18 long years of waiting.”

The midfielder also gained continental experience, making five appearances in the Copa Libertadores between 2024 and 2025.
Throughout his career, he lifted three major trophies: the Copa Sudamericana in 2023 with LDU Quito, the Copa Ecuador in 2024 with El Nacional, and the LigaPro Serie A title with LDU Quito.
Authorities have confirmed that the tragic accident is under investigation.
