The U.S. Treasury Department is making headlines after unveiling a draft design for a new $1 coin featuring President Donald Trump — part of the upcoming 250th anniversary celebrations of American independence in 2026.
Unveiled on Friday, October 3, 2025, by U.S. Treasurer Brandon Beach, the design quickly went viral after he shared images on X (formerly Twitter).
The front of the coin shows a sleek profile of Trump with the words “Liberty” and “1776–2026.” But it’s the back of the coin that’s really got people talking — it shows Trump with a raised, clenched fist in front of the U.S. flag, with the words “Fight, fight, fight” boldly inscribed. The phrase references a statement Trump made after surviving an assassination attempt last year.
A Treasury spokesperson said the design isn’t final yet, calling it a symbol of “the enduring spirit of our country and democracy, even in the face of immense obstacles.”
Still, the internet — and legal experts — are already buzzing. Critics point out that a 2020 law authorizing the anniversary coins bans portraits of living people, while an even older 1866 law generally forbids the use of living figures on U.S. currency.
Some analysts believe the design’s full-body depiction of Trump might be a clever legal loophole to skirt the “head-and-shoulders” rule. Others note that the specific ban on living presidents applies only to the Presidential $1 Coin Series, not necessarily to commemorative coins like this one.
Asked if Trump had seen the coin, White House spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt said, “I’m not sure if he’s seen it, but I’m sure he’ll love it.”
As for when Americans might see the final design? That’s on hold — Treasurer Beach says updates will come once the partial government shutdown is resolved.
