The University for Development Studies (UDS) has made history after winning the FISU World University Football Tournament.
The team played against the defending champions, Brazil’s Paulista University, in the final on Sunday, September 28, 2025.

At the end of the game, UDS won by 2-1 over Brazil’s Paulista University.
The football match was one filled with emotions. Paulista University’s Gabriel Viera stunned the UDS team with a goal in the opening 30 seconds of the match.
This did not deter the UDS team as they continued to play their hearts out. The captain, Mohammed Sulemana, scored an equaliser late in the injury time of the game. This meant there would be an extra time of play.
In extra time, Ezedeen Alhassan scored directly from a corner kick to seal a comeback and sparked wild celebrations.
UDS beat Spain’s University of Granada on penalties in he semi-finals to make it to the finals.
The University’s victory is a historic one, as this is the first time a tertiary institution on the African continent has won the prestigious competition
