Venezuelan opposition firebrand Maria Corina Machado has dedicated her Nobel Peace Prize to the “suffering people of Venezuela” — and to former U.S. President Donald Trump, whom she praised for his “decisive support” of her country’s pro-democracy struggle.
“I dedicate this prize to the suffering people of Venezuela and to President Trump for his decisive support of our cause!” Machado wrote on X shortly after the announcement.
She added, “We are on the threshold of victory and today, more than ever, we count on President Trump, the people of the United States, the peoples of Latin America, and the democratic nations of the world as our principal allies to achieve freedom and democracy.”
Machado, 58, has spent the past year in hiding after a disputed election that critics say was stolen by authoritarian President Nicolás Maduro. Barred from running, she threw her support behind ex-diplomat Edmundo González Urrutia, widely recognized internationally as the rightful winner.
The Nobel Committee hailed Machado for her “tireless work promoting democratic rights for the people of Venezuela and for her struggle to achieve a just and peaceful transition from dictatorship to democracy.”
Machado has openly backed Trump’s hardline stance on Maduro’s regime, including his military pressure and naval deployments near Venezuela, calling them “necessary measures” to restore democracy.
Following her post, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt shared Machado’s message on her own X account, amplifying the gesture.
Trump, who had been tipped as a contender for this year’s peace prize for his role in brokering peace in Gaza, ultimately missed out, with Nobel Committee chair Jørgen Watne Frydnes hinting that he was “not the most deserving candidate.”
