- NPP General Secretary Justin Kodua Frimpong has urged Akwatia voters to honour the late MP Ernest Kumi by voting for the party’s candidate
- He dismissed claims by the NDC that only the ruling party can bring development, calling it a fallacy
- Despite a poll projecting a win for the NDC’s Bernard Bediako, the NPP insists it will retain the seat in the September 2 by-election
The General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Justin Kodua Frimpong, has urged voters in Akwatia to vote for the party’s candidates in the forthcoming by-election slated for September 2, 2025.
The Akwatia by-election was necessitated by the death of the late Member of Parliament for the area, Ernest Yaw Kumi.

Ernest Kumi, the Akwatia MP on the ticket of the NPP, died on July 7, 2025, at the Lister Hospital in Accra, following a short illness.
Speaking to the media after a campaign engagement, Kodua Frimpong said the only way the NPP could honour the memory of the late MP is to retain the seat.
“The only way to reward or remember our departed MP, Ernest Kumi, is for the people of Akwatia to vote massively for Solomon Kwame Asumadu. And that’s why we have seen so many crowds here. That’s why we have seen so many cars following the float. It’s organic, it’s individuals that have decided to join because they know that the good work that was started by Ernest Kumi has to be completed by Solomon Kwame Asumadu,” he said.
The NDC has reportedly asked the people of Akwatia to vote for them because they are the only party that can bring developments to their various communities since they are in power.
However, Justin Kodua Frimpong refuted those claims, describing them as lies.
“That’s the biggest fallacy they can tell the people of Akwatia. Even the overwhelming majority that they have in parliament, what is the status of those MPs? They don’t even go to parliament. They are crying for development in their respective constituencies. So, what’s the guarantee that even if they win the Akwatia seat, development would come to Akwatia? Those seats that they have, the over 180 seats, what is the status of the MPs?” he added.
Contenders for the Akwatia seat
The Akwatia by-election is fiercely contested by the NDC’s Bernard Bediako Baidoo, a private legal practitioner, and the NPP’s Solomon Kwame Asumadu, a local miner.
Global Info Analytics has projected a win for Bernard Bediako in the Akwatia by-election.
The poll showed Bediako leading with 53 per cent of the vote, while Solomon Kwame Asumadu followed with 47 per cent.
The survey was conducted between August 27 and 28, with a sample size of 2,050 voters across the constituency.
Despite the projection by Global Info Analytics, the NPP believes they stand a better chance of winning the election than the NDC.
The leadership of the party has consequently dismissed the polls, saying that sentiments of voters on the ground indicate that the NPP will retain the seat.
