The former Member of Parliament for Adansi Asokwa in the Ashanti Region, Kobina Tahir Hammond, has urged delegates of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to elect Dr Mahamudu Bawumia as their flagbearer for the 2028 election.
The former MP, affectionately called KT Hammond, suggested that Dr Bawumia is the best bet for Ghana, and for that matter, must be elected as the presidential candidate of the party.

The renowned politician said the NPP, and to a large extent Ghana, may suffer if Dr Bawumia, the former Vice President, is not elected as President in the 2028 elections.
“If we don’t make this man (Dr Bawumia) the President of Ghana, we will suffer,” he cautioned.
KT Hammond made these remarks while speaking with some NPP delegates at the Adansi Asokwa constituency during Dr Bawumia’s campaign tour of the Ashanti Region ahead of the flagbearer race on January 31, 2026.
He further questioned why some NPP presidential aspirants were using their financial contributions to the party as a campaign strategy.
The experienced politician, who served as the Minister for Trade and Industry under President Akufo-Addo, said those presidential aspirants who claimed to be rich were nowhere to be found when the party was facing serious financial challenges in the 1990s and 2000s.
“Where were these people when the party needed money in the 1990s and 2000s? When stalwarts of the NPP went round sourcing for funds to build the party into a winning machine, these people were nowhere to be found. Those of us who embarked on that journey have not come out to brag about it,” he said.
“When you meet these so-called rich men in the party, ask them where they were before we won our first election in the year 2000. Today, because they have made a lot of money from the party, they want to use it to brag,” he added.

Dr Bawumia urges unity among presidential aspirants
Earlier, YEN.com.gh reported that Dr Mahamudu Bawumia filed his nomination forms to contest the NPP flagbearer race scheduled for January 31, 2026.
He cautioned party members presidential aspirants against actions that could destabilise the NPP ahead of the 2028 general elections.
Bawumia thanked God, his wife Samira and his campaign team, calling the bid to lead the NPP a big responsibility.
