Former Black Stars vice-captain Kwadwo Asamoah extended a helping hand to Ghana’s fight against COVID-19 with a $20,000 donation to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) in Kumasi on April 15, 2020.

The former Inter Milan star, who experienced the devastating impact of the pandemic firsthand in Italy, said he felt compelled to contribute towards Ghana’s preparedness and response.

Kwadwo Asamoah donates to KATH

His father, Emmanuel Kwasi Asamoah, represented him at a brief ceremony where the cheque was presented to hospital officials, as cited by Graphic Online.

Even more than five years on, this remarkable act of generosity remains fresh in the minds of many Ghanaians and the hospital, serving as a reminder of Asamoah’s compassion during a global crisis.

Alongside the donation, the midfielder urged Ghanaians to remain prayerful and seek divine intervention, stressing that the global crisis required both medical effort and faith, as featured by Whatsup News.

Receiving the donation, KATH’s Chief Executive, Dr. Oheneba Danso, expressed deep appreciation for Asamoah’s gesture, describing it as a true act of compassion.

He, however, noted that the hospital still needed additional resources, particularly protective equipment, to complement government supplies in safeguarding health workers.

Fans hailed Kwadwo Asamoah’s humanity

The donation sparked admiration across the country, with many Ghanaians praising Kwadwo Asamoah as a proper role model. Supporters flooded social media at the time, describing his gesture as “timely,” “patriotic,” and “a true example of leadership beyond the pitch.”

Meanwhile, Ghanaian sports journalist Anokye Kwame who covered the donation back in 2020, also weighed in, noting that Asamoah’s action reflected the responsibility high-profile players carry during national crises.

“Kwadwo’s gesture was more than money, it was a symbol of solidarity. It showed that footballers can use their influence and resources to make a real difference in society. He has been doing these things over the years and for me I am not surprised he always wins.”
