As kids, most of us couldnt wait to grow up. And when we reached the teenage years, the majority of us started to turn away from the things we once enjoyed doing, as we felt like we were now ‘too cool. For them’ But something incredible happens when you get a bit older still, you can find that you return back to all of those so called babyish things that you once loved and you really don’t care who knows it! When you have adult money to buy the things that you like and enjoy, and arent held back by trying to look a certain way to your peers it can be so freeing. You can truly be yourself and explore all of your own interests including the things that once made you happy (and that now come with a good dose of nostalgia on top).
Now that we have such incredible tech and the internet it’s given us lots more ways that we can revisit the things we all loved as kids You don’t even have to dig up the old tech on ebay and hope that it still works, and you don’t have to search through book shops to find the stories you used to love reading. Chances are you’ll find exactly what you’re after just with a quick search. So when you want to relax and unwind after a long day of work, or you’re trying to revisit the same feelings of nostalgia at Christmas or any other occasion, these sorts of things can all help you to do that.
Games
Let’s be honest, all kids love games. People might complain about kids these days being glued to their smartphones and video games, but kids have always loved to play games it’s only the format that’s changed over the years. More than likely you’ve spent time bored as a kid with nothing but a pack of cards to entertain you and somehow managed to make the hours fly by building card houses or playing solitaire or snap if you had someone to play with. Then the board games like Scrabble and Monopoly bring back childhood memories for most of us, there’s usually a funny story about someone cheating or losing their temper at Christmas or on the family caravan holiday. Even the old retro video games like Mario and Sonic are super nostalgic, these days you can get just about any old game from any type of format right on your phone or laptop. Perfect for killing a bit of time when you’re waiting for an appointment or sitting on public transport. There’s no denying that games these days are incredible, you have VR headsets and all the cool new features that can make things really immersive and realistic. But for many of us that just doesnt appeal that much, and playing old games of Super Mario feels way more familiar and appealing!
TV Shows
We all have access to so many tv shows these days, it’s fair to say we’re truly spoilt for choice. As kids most of us had just 5 channels (max!) whereas these days there are hundreds on freeview then you have Netflix, Disney, Amazon Prime and so many more. But how often do you actually want to try getting into a new show and giving something completely new a go? Or do you find yourself going back to the reruns of Friends that you’ve seen a million times? We all have our comfort shows, and rewatching things that we know the ending of can actually help us to feel safe when we’re stressed. So if you’re going through a rough time mentally or just hiding out in bed with a hangover after a heavy night, that’s why you’re more than likely to tune back into those same old shows. Maybe you’re healing from a heartbreak or trying to settle your nerves and emotions after a job interview or a rough day at work. These old shows you used to watch help you to feel comfortable and safe and are just effortless.
Books
Finally, books are another brilliant portal back to our younger years. Since social media became big, many of us would admit that we probably don’t read as many books as we used to or as many as we should. So when you do find yourself wanting to get lost in a book, it makes sense that you’d go for something that you know you’ve enjoyed in the past. If you’re not in the kind of mindset where you want something challenging or dont want to take a chance on wasting time on something that ends up being rubbish then the familiar comfort that comes from a book you’ve read before can’t be matched. Especially if you havebt read it for a few years, as you’ll have forgotten enough to make it enjoyable to read again, but you remember well enough to know how it made you feel and that you enjoyed the story.
It’s good to try new things in life and take chances as thats the way we can broaden our horizons and learn more about ourselves. But that’s not to say we need to do this every time we choose to do something we enjoy. Revisiting your old favourites and enjoying that comfort that they can give you can be unmatched when you need to feel safe and nostalgic. And now thanks to the internet we can do this more easily than ever which is great news for us all. So don’t feel bad that you’re not making the most of the millions of shows, books and games out there these days. One of the best things is having the ability to choose what you genuinely like, and if that’s your old favourites on repeat then there’s nothing wrong with it.
