After years away from the spotlight, Wiafe Swiitlypz, formerly of the popular early-2000s hiplife Trio, Dunsin, has made a strong return to the music scene with his new single, Black Man.” In an exclusive interview, the artist—known offstage as Yaw Wiafe—opened up about his rebirth as a solo act, the lessons learned from his group days, and the powerful message behind his latest track.

“The name Swiitlypz came from a female friend,” he explained with a laugh. “She said, ‘You have sweet lips that can convince anyone,’ and it just stuck. It connects with how I sing—smooth and emotional. So, I decided to make it part of my stage identity.”

From Dunsin to Determined Solo Artist

Dunsin, known for their streetwise storytelling and catchy choruses, left a mark on the early hiplife era with hits like “Oyeadieyie” But like many Ghanaian groups of the time, internal challenges led to a quiet split.

“Groups are beautiful when the energy is right,” Swiitlypz reflected. “But as soon as fame comes, everyone begins to ‘find themselves,’ and that’s where ego can creep in. With Dunsin, it was mostly character differences—selfishness, if I’m being honest.”

Following the breakup, Wiafe stepped back from the industry to focus on building a livelihood, with help from his sister, a cosmetics trader in Makola. He admitted there was a point when he nearly gave up on music entirely—until his producer, Not Exclusive, reignited his passion.

“My producer told me, ‘You have something special. Don’t stop.’ He gave me a beat, and that was it—I came back with Abba Fada, Ohinba Kisi (I’m in Love), Feeling Good, and One Man Do It Shop. It’s been a year of rediscovery.”

The Message Behind “Black Man”

His latest single, “Black Man,” marks a more reflective and socially conscious phase in his career.

“There’s this notion that blacks are bad or not good enough,” he said passionately. “But I believe God made black people unique. We need to love each other, think together, and move as one people. The song highlights the negativity that’s been attached to being black—and calls on us to change that narrative.”

While he offered a preview of the chorus during the chat, the song’s full release, according to Wiafe, aims to “inspire pride and unity among Africans everywhere.” Listen on Spotify

Adapting to a New Era

Swiitlypz acknowledges that today’s music industry has evolved far beyond the hiplife sound of his heyday.

“Back then, you could feel the soul in music—it came from deep within. Now, technology makes it easy for anyone to record at home,” he said. “But that’s not a bad thing. Every generation brings its change. As a creative, you watch the terrain and adapt.”

Listeners can expect a fresh, modern sound that blends Afrobeat and contemporary hiplife influences—proof that the artist has been paying attention to the new wave.

Collaborations and What’s Next

When asked about collaborations, Swiitlypz didn’t hesitate to mention some of Ghana’s biggest names.

“I’d love to work with Shatta Wale, Sarkodie, Stonebwoy, Kidi, Kuami Eugene, King Promise—they all have great energy. But I’m also open to new, undiscovered talent. Sometimes the ones underground are the real gems.”

He also revealed plans for his next release, a danceable track titled “Joe.”

Black Man is deep and powerful, but Joe will get everyone dancing. It’s already recorded—just waiting for the right time. By November, Ghanaians will be jamming to it.”

A New Chapter for an Old Name

Though he carries the Dunsin legacy proudly, Swiitlypz is focused on carving his own path.

“Dunsin was the umbrella that introduced me, but that phase is on pause. I’m now walking my solo journey,” he said. “I just want Ghanaians to lend me their ears again, support the new brand, and help me grow. God bless everyone supporting Swiitlypz.

With “Black Man” already stirring anticipation, Wiafe Swiitlypz’s return could mark the beginning of a new era—one that blends the soul of old-school hiplife with the consciousness of today’s Afrocentric sound.
