Minister for Foreign Affairs, Hon. Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has announced the issuance of diplomatic passports to five distinguished and celebrated Ghanaians in recognition of their contributions to promoting Ghana and Africa on the global stage.
The announcement was made at the Official Media Launch of the Ghana Diaspora Summit & Awards Gala 2025, held at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Accra. He explained that the honour was granted under the authority conferred on the Foreign Minister by NLCD 155.
Hon. Ablakwa noted that the recognition forms part of a broader strategy to strengthen Ghana’s diplomatic toolkit by empowering cultural ambassadors whose influence advances trade, tourism, cultural exchange, and soft power diplomacy. He explained that the recipients have made a significant impact in “promoting the unity of African people around the world,” adding that the diplomatic passports will enable them to expand their efforts globally
The five honourees are:
-
Wode Maya, a popular Ghanaian YouTuber and travel Vlogger who has built a global audience by showcasing African destinations, entrepreneurship, and innovation.
-
Dentaa Amoateng, founder of the GUBA Awards and GUBA Enterprise, who has been instrumental in strengthening ties between Ghana and its diaspora.
-
Rocky Dawuni, a Grammy-nominated musician and activist recognised as a cultural ambassador for peace, the environment, and African heritage.
-
Anita Erskine, an award-winning broadcaster and advocate for women’s empowerment.
-
Ibrahim Mahama, a globally acclaimed visual artist known for his large-scale installations exploring themes of history, identity, and transformation.
In addition to receiving diplomatic passports, the five personalities have been appointed ambassadors for the 2025 Diaspora Summit, which will be held in Accra from 19th and 20th December under the theme “Resetting Ghana: The Diaspora as the 17th Region.”
Diplomatic passports are typically reserved for government officials, diplomats, and state envoys travelling abroad on official duties. Issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on behalf of the President, they grant holders certain diplomatic privileges and, in some cases, visa exemptions.
The recognition of these cultural icons highlights Ghana’s commitment to strengthening partnerships with the diaspora and leveraging the influence of global trailblazers to enhance the country’s profile internationally.
