Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has announced he will meet U.S. President Donald Trump in Washington on Monday to discuss efforts to end the war with Russia.
In a statement posted on X, Zelensky said the meeting would build on a lengthy phone call held earlier this week that also involved several European leaders. “On Monday, I will meet with President Trump in Washington, D.C., to discuss all of the details regarding ending the killing and the war,” he wrote. He added that about an hour of the 90-minute call was dedicated to a one-on-one discussion with Trump.
Zelensky voiced support for Trump’s proposal to hold a trilateral meeting between Ukraine, the United States and Russia, while stressing the importance of ensuring Europe’s involvement in any peace framework. “Ukraine reaffirms its readiness to work with maximum effort to achieve peace,” he said, noting that European participation is vital for reliable security guarantees alongside the United States.
According to Ukrainian broadcaster Suspilne, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, and the leaders of Italy, Germany, Finland, France, Poland and Britain joined the earlier call.
The announcement comes after Trump met Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska on Friday. The two leaders said progress had been made in discussions on the Ukraine crisis, though no formal agreement was reached.
